Beaches

A coastal town with buildings surrounded by greenery and blue sea with islands in the background.

Honeymoon & Salomon are two of our family’s favorite beaches—just a 15-minute hike from Estate Lindholm along a National Park trail in Virgin Islands National Park. With calm waters and excellent snorkeling, they are a must-visit for anyone exploring St John beaches.

Hawksnest Bay is the first beach along North Shore Road, easily accessed from the parking lot. The clear water, shaded areas, and shallow reef make it a great spot for snorkeling, perfect for those looking for water excursions St John.

Denis Bay, accessible via the Peace Hill trail, offers a secluded beach experience with soft sand and beautiful views of the British Virgin Islands. Though there are no facilities, the total tranquility makes it worthwhile.

Jumbie Bay is a hidden gem nestled between Hawksnest and Trunk Bay. A short trail from the road leads to this quiet cove, making it ideal for a swim or a picnic.

Trunk Bay is a world-famous beach frequently ranked among the top 10 in the world. It offers food, restrooms, lifeguards, and an underwater snorkeling trail for beginners—an essential part of any dining guide St John.

Cinnamon Bay features a long, picturesque beach with plenty of parking. Home to the National Park campground, a restaurant, and a small grocery, it’s great for swimming and paddleboarding.

Little Cinnamon Bay is accessible by a short trail from the west end of Cinnamon. Quieter and more private, it boasts calm water and soft sand for a relaxing day.

Maho Bay is a favorite for those wanting to spot sea turtles and stingrays. With calm waters, kayak and paddleboard rentals, plus a food truck and bar, it makes for a fun and easy beach day.

Francis Bay is quiet and family-friendly, with calm water and great snorkeling along the left reef. It offers restrooms and easy parking, making it convenient for families.

Leinster Bay / Waterlemon Cay can be reached via a scenic 20–30-minute walk along the shoreline that leads to one of St. John’s top snorkeling spots. Don’t miss the panoramic views from the nearby hilltop.

Salt Pond Bay, located on the southeastern side past Coral Bay, features some of the island’s best snorkeling and provides access to the Ram Head trail. Be sure to pack water, sunscreen, and snacks for your adventure.

Great Lameshur Bay is located past Salt Pond on a rougher road. This quiet, rocky beach offers great snorkeling and connects to the Lameshur hiking trails, ideal for adventurous visitors.

Hansen Bay, on the East End beyond Coral Bay, features calm, clear water along with beachside kayak and paddleboard rentals. The drive to this beach offers breathtaking views toward the BVIs.

Trails & Treks

Three people discussing a map under a patio umbrella with a scenic tropical backdrop.

Lind Point Trail / Honeymoon / Salomon Beaches The trailhead is just 100 yards from our parking lot, making it easy to access this beautiful area of Virgin Islands National Park. The Upper and Lower Lind Point Trails loop around Lind Point (hence the name Estate Lindholm), forming the northern side of Cruz Bay Harbor. The upper trail offers a stunning overlook of Cruz Bay. It’s a moderate trail and flatter than most on the island, leading to Honeymoon and Salomon Beaches — about a 10-minute walk down and 15 minutes back up. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes such as Tevas or sneakers for this leisurely hike.   Reef Bay Trail St. John’s most iconic hike! The trailhead begins at mile marker 5 on Centerline Road and descends roughly three miles to the beach. Although it’s mostly downhill, the steep, rocky terrain and the heat make it moderately strenuous. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes such as Tevas or sneakers. About two-thirds of the way down, look for the short spur trail leading to the Taino Indian stone petroglyphs and waterfall — one of the island’s most sacred and beautiful spots. At the end of the main trail, near the beach, you’ll also find historic sugar mill ruins. Bring plenty of water, bug spray, and snacks as you explore this stunning part of St John beaches.   Caneel Hill & Margaret Hill This trailhead is also only about 100 yards from our parking lot. The hike is a steady uphill climb, but the 360° panoramic views from the top are worth every step! The trail continues up to Margaret Hill and eventually connects to North Shore Road near the Caneel Bay entrance. You can return via the paved road or back along the trail. The full route is about 2.4 miles each way — roughly an 80-floor climb!   Ram Head Trail A fantastic hike located at Salt Pond Bay, about 45 minutes from Estate Lindholm, on the island’s East End past Coral Bay. This trail is known for its dramatic coastal views and is especially magical during a full moon when you can watch the moon rise from the ocean. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, or wear long sleeves — there’s little shade along the way. The vistas at the top are absolutely stunning, making it a great spot for those on water excursions St John.   Waterlemon Cay / Leinster Bay / Murphy Great House One of our family’s favorites! The trail begins near the famous Annaberg Ruins, a well-preserved sugar and cotton mill site worth exploring before your hike. Follow the shoreline where the asphalt meets the beach — this is the Leinster Bay Trail on most maps. The flat walk leads to a small sandy beach and Waterlemon Cay, an excellent snorkel spot. For an extra adventure, continue to the Murphy Great House Ruins: at the end of the beach, look for a path heading uphill behind the mangroves. It leads to two sets of ruins with incredible views overlooking the British Virgin Islands. This is a long walk in and out, so bring food, water, and your camera. Sneakers are recommended.   America Hill Across from the Cinnamon Bay entrance, you’ll find beautifully preserved ruins maintained by the National Park Service — a great stop before your hike. The America Hill trail begins to the left of these ruins, right off the main road. It’s a steep climb, but the view at the top — overlooking Big Maho, Francis, and Mary’s Point — is breathtaking and well worth the effort. If you're looking for a dining guide St John, check out nearby options after your hike, or consider vehicle rentals St John for more exploration.
